COOCK+ PRINTELLIGENCE | AI built for the graphic industry

Region:
Flanders
Financed by

From production insights to operational improvements

Companies in the graphic arts industry largely digitalised their front-office processes, production data often remains underused COOCK+ PRINTELLIGENCE brings AI  to the shop floor. The project develops practical tools and reusable AI building blocks to optimise porductio processes, support operators and strengthen productivity.

Target group

PRINTELLIGENCE is primarily aimed at companies in the graphic arts industry with their own production facilities, including:

  • Commercial printing companies producing newspapers, magazines and books
  • Label and packaging producers
  • Large-format printing companies producing banners, signage or textiles
  • Companies using printing technologies for industrial applications, such as printed electronics
  • The project focuses particularly on companies with at least five employees working in production

Context

The Flemish graphic arts industry has made significant progress in digitalising activities such as design and pre-flight. On the shopfloor, however, the potential of data remains largely untapped. More than 75% of companies have connected machines, yet the data they generate is rarely used to optimise production.

At the same time, growing product variety and process complexity make manual decision-making increasingly difficult. Companies also face practical barriers to adopting AI fromselecting the right technologies andconfiguring them effectively to using internal data securely and demonstrating a clear return on investment. This limits their ability to translate available data and AI technologies into measurable improvements on the production floor.

Objectives & results

COOCK+ PRINTELLIGENCE aims to boost productivity in the graphic arts industry by accelerating the adoption of AI and enabling companies to make better use of their production data.

The project aims to:

  • Identify AI technologies that address concrete production challenges in the graphic arts industry
  • Develop reusable AI building blocks for cost reduction and operator support
  • Make practical AI knowledge accessible to companies across the sector
  • Support companies in selecting and implementing suitable AI solutions with technology partners

Key expected results

  • A state-of-the-art overview of relevant AI technologies and their potential for graphic production
  • An interactive AI Selector matching production challenges and data maturity with suitable AI solutions
  • A toolbox with reusable prompts, scripts and API flows for industrial applications
  • An implementation guide covering technical requirements, data protection and secure AI deployment
  • An interactive chatbot helping companies navigate and apply the project's results
  • Validated proof-of-concept demonstrators focused on production efficiency and operator support
  • Hands-on workshops where companies can experiment with the developed solutions

Approach

VIGC and Sirris combine knowledge of the graphic arts industry with applied AI expertise to translate concrete production challenges into practical solutions.

  1. Identifying relevant use cases
Together with the steering group, VIGC identifies and prioritises production challenges where AI can create tangible value. Suitable technologies and datasets are then selected for further development.
  2. Developing and testing AI building blocks
Sirris develops reusable components such as prompts, scripts and API integrations in iterative eight-week cycles. These building blocks are tested through proof-of-concept applications focused on areas such as reducing production costs and supporting operators.
  3. Supporting implementation
The partners translate the research into practical resources, including the AI Selector, implementation guidelines and recommendations for secure data use. The results are brought together in a central web hub with an interactive AI assistant.
  4. Sharing knowledge with the sector
Technical articles, instructional videos, workshops and demonstration sessions make the results accessible to a wider audience. Matchmaking activities connect ompanies in the graphic arts industry with relevant technology providers.
