Inspiring women in (big) data, at Sirris too!

Our society today is diverse. This implies that the data generated, processed through algorithms and put to use should be diverse too. This is why the teams working with the data are diverse as well. In big data, women hold an important place and this is something we know all about, in Belgium and at Sirris!

Our society is becoming increasingly data-driven. Data is gaining value for companies and is the driving force behind innovative emerging services and applications. Data is also the new raw material of tomorrow's economy and an important asset to improve one's competitive position.

The data that is being generated and collected, is processed and manipulated by algorithms. In the next decade, we will experience on a daily basis how algorithms will increasingly influence our lives and thus society. It is therefore important that neither the algorithm nor the data are biased. One way to avoid this pitfall is to work with diverse teams. A diverse organisation reflects the society and environment in which it thrives and which it depends on. Therefore, it is not only logical but also necessary that our services, products, algorithms and data are created and designed by diverse teams. And so, data is everybody’s business and the same goes for diversity, equality and inclusion.

This is also the idea behind Women in Big Data, with its mission to inspire and connect women working in the field of big data. This originally American organisation has grown into a juggernaut with over 17,000 members spread across 37 local chapters in six continents.
