Additive manufacturing, also referred to as 3D printing, is offering ever-increasing performance and scope for application. By gaining in speed, precision and high-performance materials (polymers, metal, ceramic, etc.), it has become a genuine innovative manufacturing method.

Highly mediatised and although increasingly present in the business environment (particularly in subcontracting and, occasionally, implemented on site), its potential for product development is, as yet, unfamiliar, underestimated and underexploited. Yet 3D printing offers the potential for genuine disruptive technologies that can satisfy the challenges that currently face our businesses.

Integrating additive technologies within a company can scare the most sceptical, or lead to hasty and sometimes unfortunate choices. Whatever the situation, making the right choice of application is an essential step towards the success of any project.

Not just one single technology

When we talk about additive manufacturing, it is not a unique process, but rather a set of technologies all based on the general principle of adding matter, layer by layer. As early as 2012, the American standards organisation, ASTM, began to structure its classification. It defined 7 major additive manufacturing families that are largely in use today.
