O&M of offshore renewable energy assets: lessons learnt from industry

Operations & Maintenance (O&M) represents almost a third of the total lifetime costs of an offshore wind farm. The market keeps growing with the number of wind farms. On 17 December, the consortium partners of Optiwind and their event partners OWI-Lab and Gen4Wave will be holding their open project meeting. The focus will be on real life experiences in O&M.

In the last 5 years, European frontrunners have increasingly deployed renewable energy plants at sea. Belgium is certainly one of the pioneers. While a growing number of offshore wind farms is coming into operation, the market for their Operation & Maintenance is really taking off. By 2020 (within 4 years) offshore wind farm operators will spend an estimated 5 billion Euro per year on O&M in Europe alone. O&M typically represents about 30% of the total lifetime costs of an offshore wind farm.

The Optiwind open project meeting, organised with OWI-Lab and Gen4Wave, will take place in Brussels on 17 December. Three speakers will present their real life experiences with Operations & Maintenance of offshore renewable energy assets. O&M is also the leitmotiv within Optiwind.

Research in O&M for offshore wind parks

The project Optiwind – full title ”Serviceability optimization of the next generation of offshore wind turbines” - was started up in October 2012 and will run until September 2016. This project, funded by IWT in the SBO program, builds up pre-competitive knowledge in the following main domains:

  • Improvement of the design and concepts of offshore wind park components and their serviceability, and development and validation of dedicated numerical modeling and component testing
  • Development of robust and effective Structural Health and Condition Monitoring techniques for offshore wind energy through advanced data-processing and new sensor technologies

The IWT funded VIS project OWOME - “Offshore Wind O&M Excellence” – aims to support and enable the development and validation of smart and cost-reducing O&M solutions. The project will open up real life offshore measurements and data, develop an integrated data platform and support companies in the development of smart O&M solutions. In this regard, the 5 demonstrators that will be set up within the project will play a pivotal role.

More information about the open project meeting can be found here. This event is free, but please register before 15 December via http://register.optiwind.be/
