Find your way in the possibilities of indoor and outdoor positioning

To help you to get a clear view on the state of the art of indoor and outdoor positioning technologies the Mechatronics 4.0 team organises a masterclass seminar on positioning technologies. In this seminar we will focus on localisation technologies that can be used in industrial and logistic environments, to localise both assets or goods and mobile systems/vehicles.

The importance of positioning in our daily life has increased significantly during the last decade. Finding our way without a GPS seems to have become a long lost skill.

Initially, positioning technology was only suited for outdoor environments (partially because of the military origin of GPS signals). GPS signals do not work indoors or in narrow streets as they tend to attenuate and reflect on roofs and walls. More recently, several commercially available indoor positioning technologies have started to appear. An indoor position system can help to deliver location based content and advertising, but killer applications for indoor positioning may be found in the automation and logistics sectors.

The search for a suitable positioning solution

With sufficiently accurate indoor positioning more and more systems can be made autonomous. However, different localisation techniques are under development and not one single technology is suited for all applications. Also, the combination of several positioning technologies is an ongoing challenge. So there is no straightforward answer (yet) to selecting and realising an appropriate positioning solution.

Different applications have different requirements. Not every application requires high accuracy or a high update rate. Some have to be able to work in static environments, while others have to work in highly dynamic industrial environments.  In some cases significant improvements can be obtained by combining several positioning technologies. A reliable blended indoor and outdoor positioning system might not be readily available (yet), but there are already several technologies available that could be suitable for your application.

Masterclass seminar

To help you to get a clear view on the state of the art of indoor and outdoor positioning technologies the Mechatronics 4.0 team organises a masterclass seminar on positioning technologies on 28 March. During this seminar we will focus on localisation technologies that can be used in industrial and logistic environments, to localise both assets or goods and mobile systems/vehicles.

Several companies will bring testimonials on their experiences with different techniques in their applications.

Technologies that will be discussed in this seminar:

  • Ultra-Wide Band
  • GPS
  • Bluetooth (BLE), Wi-Fi, …
  • Sensor fusion (IMU, Encoder, Radar, …)
  • Visual Odometry

You can find all further information on the programme and registration in our agenda.
