The Data Protection Authority has been created

The Belgian official journal of 10 January 2018 published the legal text creating the Data Protection Authority. An important step in GDPR application.

GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation), the European reference text (2016/679) on personal data protection will be directly applicable throughout the 28 Member States from 25 May 2018.
Its provisions may have a significant impact for companies.

As it comes into force, the CPP (Belgian Commission for the Protection of Privacy), which has so far been dealing with these issues, will be radically changed. It is being replaced by the Data Protection Authority (DPA) which becomes a real control and penalties authority receiving new powers and procedures.
The legal text was published in the Belgian official journal on 10 January 2018.

The DPA will also play an information role in relation to the general public on the importance of personal data protection. It will also inform companies and advise them on their obligations and the methods for managing and processing personal data.
