Around 3 million patent applications filed in 2015

Statistics indicate an important increase in patent applications across the globe for 2015 (2.9 million) under the impetus of China. Other intellectual property rights continue to enjoy increased success.

According to the WIPO "World Intellectual Property Indicators 2016" report, some 2.9 million patent applications were filed across the globe in 2015, i.e. a 7.8% increase on 2014 figures. A total of 1.2 million patents were awarded.

38% of these requests were filed in China, i.e. as many as the United States, Japan and Korea, the three following nations whose offices received the largest number of requests, combined. However, these requests are essentially domestic: only 4.2% of Chinese residents file requests outside China, compared to a worldwide average of a third of all patents.

The sectors that file the largest number of patent applications are: computer science (7.9% of total requests), electrical machines (7.3%) and digital communication (4.9%).

Other intellectual property titles are also enjoying increased success with + 15.3% for trade mark registrations (6 million in 2015) and + 2.3% for drawing and model registrations (872,800 in 2015).
