Product testing & certification

Sirris tests products and materials at a number of testing labs in various locations. Sirris acts as an independent partner for the companies requesting the tests. Our network of high-tech laboratories and experienced experts guarantees the detailed reports and recommendations they require for the materials, parts and product samples tested. Our experts’ up-to-date knowledge and our state-of-the-art infrastructure ensures Sirris is at the cutting edge of the testing of metals, plastics, composites, coatings, adhesives and 3D-printed components.

We perform descriptive, destructive and non-destructive tests in the testing labs. These labs deliver approximately 1,300 test reports every year. The laboratory staff includes 50 experts in materials and 20 regulatory specialists. Sirris received ISO 9001 certification in 2019. The labs form part of an extensive international network and have received ISO 17025 accreditation from BELAC, the Belgian accreditation body.

ECHT 2020 focuses on carbon in steel

ECHT 2020 (the European Conference on Heat Treatment) took place in early December. The conference was held online, not in Antwerp as originally planned, due to the COVID-19 crisis. The three-day conference mainly addressed themes on the carbon element in steel, such as carburising, carbonitriding and also surface layers such as diamond-like carbon (DLC).

More than 125 participants discovered and followed the novelties and developments of carburising from their offices or homes. Despite the fact that carburising has existed for some time, new developments are being made in this field, which are important for industry. During the conference, various developments were discussed in the themed sessions. Participants in the conference could also acquaint themselves with the Sirris Test labs at a virtual booth.

Sirris's participation in this conference was made possible by the DCT4Cut CORNET project, subsidised by VLAIO (Flemish Agency for Innovation and Entrepreneurship).

Buzon, first to offer pedestals tested against ISO 17025 accreditation

The innovative adjustable terrace support systems manufactured by the Liège-based Buzon family business are made of a polymer that has been undergoing tests at Sirris labs for more than 20 years. This professional collaboration has enabled the company to define the technical datasheets and other product characteristics, with the aim of obtaining international quality certification (CE, ICC and BBA). The Sirris testing lab in Seraing received ISO 17025 accreditation from Belac (Belgian accreditation body) in 2020, for a compression test on the Buzon support systems. This is a first, and in a pandemic, even more!

Study shows that barely half of Belgian tech companies are applying extra quality tests

Over the years, quality control has become a priority for Belgian tech companies.

At the end of 2020, Sirris organised a survey among its customers and members, as well as via social media. The aim: to find out how many companies in the Belgian technology industry use quality control through testing and how. 144 companies participated in the relative and comparative study. The survey demonstrated that businesses quality control is highly valued by many businesses, but also that others can still make great strides. Today, quality control mainly involves certificates. For example, about 7 out of 10 entrepreneurs always check whether their materials and components have the necessary certificates. Even better: more than half carry out additional quality tests. But that also means that almost half of them do not (yet) organise this and rely solely on certificates – or even leave out this form of quality control.
